The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge, and is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco. It was named the Golden Gate Bridge because it spans the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean. It was completed in 1937 and celebrated it’s 75th anniversary this year in 2012. At the time of completeion, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, but now is number te in the world. In the U.S. it tis the second longest after the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City. It’s total length is 8,981 feet, and it is 692 feet above the water.
The Frommers travel guide considers the Golden Gate Bridge “possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world”. Even though almost everyone knows what the bridge looks like, it is really hard to understand exactly how beautiful, and awe-inspiring it is, until you actually see it in person. We spent quite a bit of time not only taking pictures of the bridge from close up, but also from every vantage point we could from around the city. An amazing thing about the bridge is how beautiful it is no matter what the weather. We have pictures of it not only in brilliant sunshine, but also clouds and mist, and it always looks spectacular. The color of the bridge is an orange vermillion called international orange, and was picked because it complements the natural surroundings and allows the bridge to be more visible in fog.

A view of what the bridge looks like in the fog. This just goes to show how well the orange paint makes the brig=dge visible, no matter what the weather is like.
