Our first big stop for day #3 on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath was at the Catoctin Creek Aqueduct…
Catoctin Aqueduct Restoration Project: The Catoctin Aqueduct spanned Catoctin Creek for 139 years, until two of its three arches collapsed into the Creek on October 31, 1973. The restoration project is expected to be completed by the end of 2009, and was made possible through generous donations from the public.
Can you see him?
We were so surprised to see this owl in the middle of the day, in fact, we saw a total of five owls on this stretch of the trail. Candee and Tom were very excited, but I felt a bit nervous, because I didn’t want to become lunch!
Taking a much needed break in front of one of the many Lockhouses on the trail.
I offered to pedal for a few miles. I’m not sure why Candee wouldn’t let me!
We were greeted by black clouds and thunder as we arrived at the Seneca Creek Aqueduct.
Not a welcoming sight when you are on your bike and still slightly over 22 miles from the end of the trail! We only rested a moment before heading out, as we wanted to stay in front of the storm!
Just as we had rounded the bend, we saw another rider pulled off on the side of the trail with a flat tire. The thunder rumbling in the sky prompted us to keep going, but instead we stopped to help him.
Several months ago, the tables were turned and we were stuck in a similar situation with a flat tire, miles away from the car, and another rider stopped to help us. When we thanked him and tried to pay him for his efforts, he refused and said simply, “Please just pay it forward.”
The storm finally did catch up with us, but we were able to duck under a bridge when the worst of it hit! The thunder sure was loud!
The skies cleared up by the time we got to Great Falls Park.
Do you want to take a ride in a canal boat? It looks like it might be fun!
Isn’t it pretty? Great Falls is one of my favorite spots on the trail!
We did it! We did it!
We rode the entire Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Path! We conquered the C&O! The path itself is 184 1/2 mile, but because of food and lodging stops, we pedaled for a grand total of 191+ miles! Yeah!
Two more views of the end of the trail…Georgetown.
