Retiro Park is one of the most popular and visited parks in Madrid. You can see people of all ages engaging in anything from roller skating, to jogging, to strolling or even napping in one of the tree shaded grassy areas. I should know because I’ve napped there myself!
My friends and I felt very rested after a nice nap in the cool shade of a tree in the park.
The park is located behind the Prado museum and was originally built for King Phillip IV. There are many very beautiful areas and buildings inside the park which was opened to the public in the 1800’s.
In addition to the beautiful buildings, another very focal point of the park is the large lake where you can go boating or simply sit around the steps watching street performers at work.
There are many statues in the park, including “Angel Caido”, the only known statue in the world dedicated to a fallen angel. You can also see whimsical sculptures like the one below.
My friend Tom and I think we look just like the statue!
What do you think?
Cool, refreshing fountains are located through out the park and beautiful flowers add splashes of color. Be sure you don’t miss seeing the Crystal Palace during the time you spend enjoying the park.
