Welcome to Kassel

Polly the Travel Frog Visits Kassel, Germany

The word "Stadt" means city in German

Kassel, Germany

This is Helmut Brunn and his son. Helmut and his wife Thea live in Kassel, Germany--and now I live with them!

Helmut just celebrated his 82nd birthday on April 4, 2010—Easter! His son and daughter-in-law came to visit him from Herrenberg, Germany , which is about 400 Kilometers away to the south near the city of Stuttgart. They traveled by train (der Bahn) and arrived at the train station (der Bahnhof) in the city of Kassel.

Note to self: Don't take pictures of moving trains!

Helmut and Thea had to pick them up from the train station and Helmut invited me to tag along. I’m glad I went, because not only was I able to see what the train station looked like, but we were also able to do a little bit of sightseeing with his family after they had a chance to go back to their hotel and freshen up a bit.

This was their hotel room. Don't the pillows and blankets look comfortable! Ahhh, I could get used to this

Kassel is home to Documenta, a contemporary and modern art exhibition held every five years. People visit here from all over the world. There are many pieces of modern art scattered around the city, but my favorite is the “Man Walking to the Sky” statue created by Jonathan Borofsky, which depicts a man walking up a giant angled pole.

Hello Walking Man! Mind if I join you?

People always gather around to look at this statue, and I wanted to get in on the fun, so I hopped up the pole and joined the walking man. Look at me! We used a special program on the computer to create the effect of me swinging on the pole. Check out the pictures we took to make it happen. Pretty awesome, huh?

Shhh, don't tell how I did it!

Wilhelmshöhe Park is a beautifully landscaped park nestled on a mountainside. The park is “crowned” by a statue of Herkules, which sits atop a huge stone foundation located at the top of the mountain. Helmut and Thea promised to take me to visit the park on another day. I can’t wait!

Kassel, Germany

Can you see Herkules at the top of the hill?

In the center of Kassel we found the Rathaus, or city hall. I loved the giant golden lions that guarded the staircase, and the blue shield you see in the picture is the city emblem.

"This is me with the golden lion!

Can you spot me?

I had a great day and I can’t wait for my next German adventure!
